CaregiverAsia Partners with Great Eastern to Offer First-In-Market Program for Children with Special Needs

Singapore, 11 December 2019 – CaregiverAsia Pte Ltd, an online aggregator of trusted on-demand health and caregiving services and Great Eastern, a market leader and a well-established trusted insurance brand in Singapore and Malaysia, have partnered to offer a first-in-market program to ensure that children with special needs are able to continue with their therapy for up to 15 years with accompanying care services such as medical escorting and childminding should something happen to their parents or guardians.

Senior Minister of State at the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Ministry of Communications and Information, Sim Ann said: “While many important social services are publicly funded, there are also meaningful opportunities for corporates to contribute to social good. This can be done not only through outright donations in cash and in kind, but also through offering services at low-bono rates. Today, three organisations from the private sector and people sector have come together to do something for families of children with special needs. This collaboration embodies the spirit of SGTogether and SGCares. I hope to see more corporates stepping forward to forge similar partnerships with the people sector, bringing us towards a more inclusive and compassionate society”.

“Singapore has more than 30,000 students with special needs and it is proven that early intervention and continued long term therapy is key to ensuring a life that is healthy and happy,” said Ms Yeo Wan Ling, CEO, Caregiver Asia; “There is, however, a market gap in products that ensure that financial safety nets are available for children to continue with their therapy when their families go into financial duress. As such, we are so pleased, to partner with Great Eastern and Extra•Ordinary People to provide this ground-up enterprise-led initiative to launch the Extraordinary Care Plan, which will benefit thousands of families”.

The Extraordinary Care Program (EOCP) seeks to support children with continued long-term therapy and professional care services through an insurance pay-out of SGD150,000 in the event of accidental death or permanent disability of the parent or guardian. This pay-out will ensure that the child receives regular therapy and care services for up to 15 years. Additionally, the EOCP will provide families with immediate access to complimentary hours of care services and comprehensive therapy services at highly subsidised rates1.

Said Mr Ryan Cheong, Managing Director for Digital for Business at Great Eastern; “We are thrilled to be part of this partnership where we create products that protect our community in meaningful and relevant ways. We believe that we should continue to look towards contributing to an inclusive society. The launch of the EOCP is a small step in this direction.”

The EOCP will launch with Extra•Ordinary People as its inaugural therapy partner. A Singapore-based charity, Extra•Ordinary People provides child-centric and multi-disciplinary therapy services for special needs persons through their one-stop integrated therapy centres in Joo Chiat Place and Beach Road. The program is open to all integrated therapy service providers, and hopes to see more providers come forward with their services in future. Mr Wee Boo Kuan, Co-Founder of Extra•Ordinary People, shared; “This is a much needed initiative. Therapy services are crucial in the continued wellness for persons with special needs, and unfortunately, this is also one of the first things to go when families face financial difficulties. The financial pay-out, together with the weekly medical escorting services that come along with it, will ensure that families have both the financial means and the peace of mind to make sure that their children continue with their therapy”.

In addition to securing the means to long term therapy, the EOCP is also designed to assist parents in safe escorting of their children to the therapy sessions by means of the accompaniment of trained Caregivers skilled in working with special needs children. In preparation of the increase of demand for such Caregivers, CaregiverAsia will augment its pool of freelance Caregivers by working closely with the South West Community Development Council (CDC) on the Caregiving @ South West programme. “Caring for special needs persons require special skillsets and training,” said Mayor of South West District, Low Yen Ling, “Through this effort, we hope to expand the resources and care options for parents with children with special needs to give them greater support and peace of mind. This is part of growing our Caregiving @ South West programme, which will also widen the careers of freelance caregivers as they up-skill their knowledge to include care for children with special needs.” Underscoring the merits of the EOCP, Mayor Low added, “This programme is an example of how the private sector can work closely with the community to identify win-win solutions and meet relevant needs together.”

The Launch will see some 50 enterprises2 and individuals3 contributing more than 300 of the EOCP to be given to networks of families with children with special needs. Said Ms Lynn Chow, Executive Director of Nursing Home Charis Manor and CEO of healthcare education institute CSM Academy International, “When we were approached to pledge our support for the EOCP, I immediately agreed to it, as it is doing our part as a Singapore enterprise to show that we stand behind the Special Needs community and we will continue to do our part to support inclusiveness”.

1 The EOCP comes with 2 hours of complimentary care services and further discounted rates on additional services by CaregiverAsia, plus highly subsidised rates to a variety of therapy services by Extra•Ordinary People.

2 Enterprises who have pledged to the Extraordinary Care Program (EOCP) includes: Birch Capital, Bukit Timah Community Development and Welfare Fund, CSM Academy International, Dr Barrie Tan Clinic, Ecowise Holdings, Kenko Holdings, La Clinic, Park Hotel Group, Philips Singapore, Singapore Press Holdings Foundation, Soilbuild Group Holdings, South West Community Development Council, White Coat Holdings. This list does not include enterprises who have pledged anonymously.

3 Individuals who have pledged to the Extraordinary Care Program (EOCP) includes: Dr Cecil Wong, Ms Ivy Lai, Mr James Lim, Ms Joyce Ng. This list does not include individuals who have pledged anonymously.

CaregiverAsia and the Association of Psychotherapists and Counsellors Singapore (APACS) Ink Alliance to Provide Mental Wellness Safety Nets for Freelance Caregivers in Singapore.

Singapore, 21 February 2019 – CaregiverAsia, an online aggregator of trusted on-demand health and caregiving services, and APACS, an association for mental healthcare professionals, combine their expertise to foster stronger synergies in the area of mental wellness for freelance healthcare professionals.

Caregiver stress is an often overlooked condition for professionals in the caregiving and home care industries, with studies providing figures as high as 7 in 10 healthcare workers having faced verbal or physical abuse in their line of work. Freelance caregivers are especially vulnerable as many practice their trades alone, and have limited access to mental wellness resources and community-based support groups.

The partnership between freelance platform CaregiverAsia, and professional psychotherapy association, APACS, aims to bring, for the first time in Singapore, mental wellness awareness and relief, to Singapore’s freelance caregiving community. APACS will serve as a mental wellness anchor for CaregiverAsia’s community of 8,000 freelance caregivers through a series of talks, therapy sessions and group sharing sessions throughout the year. CaregiverAsia will also in turn, be a source of respite care, for APACS members.

Said Ms. Yeo Wan Ling, CEO of CaregiverAsia, “Our caregivers are the beating heart of our business. Caring for their well being has always been a priority and this partnership with APACS is a monumental step in helping them cope in a potentially stressful industry. We have been building up multiple safety nets for freelance caregivers over the years, such as introducing training programs, medical malpractice insurance and service agreements to help protect our freelance community. With the partnership with APACS, we are thrilled to now be able to extend our safety nets to that of protecting the mental wellness of our caregivers.”

Jeslyn Lim, President of APACS, had this to share, “We are absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to partner with CaregiverAsia. This collaboration entails significant advancement and growth in helping professionals in the healthcare industry. We are confident that freelance caregivers will benefit from the mental health care that APACS members can bring to their lives. By taking care of their own mental health, freelancers will, in turn, be able to enhance the quality of care for their patients, creating a balanced virtuous cycle. We are sure that the alliance will yield tremendous accomplishments for all.”

Superheroes in Our Midst: Caregiving @ South West to Celebrate, Support and Empower the Community

Singapore, 24 January 2018 – Superheroes are usually associated with somebody dedicated to saving the world decked out in capes and superhuman abilities. Many do not realise that there are superheroes in our midst. Based on the Singapore Survey on Informal Caregiving, three (3) in four (4) caregivers juggle between work commitments and caring for loved ones, spending 38 hours on average on caregiving duties. With one (1) in four (4) Singaporeans projected to be aged 65 and above by 2030, the number of caregivers will be expected to rise accordingly as well. Hence, to meet current caregiving needs and better prepare the community, the South West Community Development Council (CDC) will be launching Caregiving @ South West this Thursday to provide a robust and conducive environment for caregivers in the district.

As part of the South West Future Plan, the Caregiving @ South West aims to tackle the multi-faceted aspects of Caregiving via a three-pronged approach. The movement will span across three (3) years, to Celebrate Caregivers and Caregiving, Support Caregivers and Empower Caregiving.

Caregiving @ South West Partners

“Caregiving can get really tough, and when caregivers are at risk, they are not the only ones impacted; the people who depend on their care may also suffer. Through the Caregiving @ South West initiative, we aim to weave a net of support to equip, enable and empower caregivers in their journey. We also value and recognise the contributions they make through their work of caregiving. With a greying population, it is important that we put resources in place and rally the community together to become an asset and strength to caregivers.” says Mayor Low.

So far, a myriad of community partners and supporters have come on-board the Caregiving @ South West initiative to provide care and support to caregivers and care recipients. Key partners such as Agency of Integrated Care (AIC), National University Health System (NUHS), Pioneer Generation Office (PGO), SG Enable, and St Luke’s ElderCare Pte. Ltd. have committed to contributing content and expertise to Caregiving @ South West. Corporate organisations such as Ministry of Health Holdings (MOHH), Caregiver Asia and HUSH TeaBar will also be supporting the initiative.

Debunking Caregiving Myths

The common Caregiver archetype is typically one of a middle-aged, unmarried female daughter entrusted with the responsibility of caring for aged parents. However, this is not the case for Mr Richard Ashworth. By day, the 63-yearold retiree spends his time working on his award-winning community gardens around the South West District. The active Fun Walker also plays the role of a caregiver to is adoptive father, Mr John Ashworth, who is diagnosed with skin cancer. “I was very rebellious when I was younger, and my father was the one who took me in and gave me a second chance at life,” Mr Ashworth shares. “I do worry that I’m not taking good enough care of him but I will try my best. He was my superhero and I would be nothing without him. Now that he needs me, it’s my turn to be his. Caregiving is simple but not easy, you do not need to be a doctor or lawyer to take care of someone. Caregiving is all about your heart towards the care receiver. An initiative like Caregiving @ South West will definitely be beneficial in providing support for caregivers like myself.”

Most caregivers are seniors with chronic diseases themselves and a rising trend of male and young caregivers under the age of 40 has also been observed.* To debunk the myth and create greater awareness amongst the South West community, 10 roadshows will be roved to various locations, including schools, shopping malls, social service organisations to Celebrate Caregiving. Customised collar pins will also be given out during the roadshows to encourage care-recipients to show appreciation to their caregivers.

Roll-out of Caregiving @ South West @ St. Luke’s ElderCare

The roll-out of Caregiving @ South West will include a sharing of caregiver journey by Mr Richard Ashworth, and the presentation of a Gerbera flower to signify cheer and happiness, a Caregiving @ South West Collar Pin and a “Help Kit’ comprising useful information from the various partners.

“In our interaction with family members caring for a loved one, we recognise the toll of caregiving and the need for self-care. It is only with self-care that caregivers can give more abundantly of themselves to provide high quality care. Through Caregiving @ South West, we wish to acknowledge the caregivers in our midst, provide a support network and equip them with the skills to continue to care for their loved ones,” says Dr Kenny Tan, Chief Executive Officer, St Luke’s ElderCare Ltd. “At the same time, the community can also come to learn of the types of caregiving support available. We are appreciative of this opportunity to partner with South West CDC for Caregiving @ South West.”

Details of the event are as follows:

Date : Thursday, 25 January 2018
